UF: School of Architecture

Yesterday John Maze, whose hippie hair rivals mine in length, came to talk to us transfer students about: UF School of Architecture!!!  There must have been a good 30 kids when he starts and little by little a lot of them started to leave.  He said it didn't hurt his feelings that they were not interested in the school. My friend next to me whispered in my ear, "I wanna go to Pratt, but the weather sucks, so I'm gonna stick around" lol :D  He told us all about our pin up and what the 2 years will bring.   He went through the D5 to D8 curriculum, and it will be intense.  I am freaking psyched and going to need a loan/scholarship so I can properly focus on my assignments without having to deal with any other distractions.

____

I unfortunately could not go and protest outside Sea World because of prior commitments.  I read this great post and picture from JNonymous; who says everything that needs to be said perfectly:

Imagine being constrained to the walls of your empty room for the rest of your life…when you should be out exploring the world. You would go crazy too. I understand his chances of survival are slim, but at least he would be free! I’d take the risk, without a second thought. I imagine Sea World doesn’t want to take the risk because it will cost $$$. Not only to transport him back to the ocean, but then to adapt him back to the wild, then to replace him. But if they really truly cared about these animals, they wouldn’t cage them up. Set him free!

A few interesting killer whale facts:

- Killer whales are capable of swimming 100 miles in a day.

- Tilikum is the largest Orca in captivity, measuring 22ft 6in long, weighing somewhere around 12,500 lbs.

- The life expectancy of a killer whale in the wild is 50 – 60 years for males, and up to 90 years for females, however, killer whales in captivity live less than 30 years.

- Wikipedia quotes: ‘Wild killer whales are not considered a threat to humans, although there have been cases of captive killer whales attacking their handlers at marine theme parks.’ Interesting.

Some more interesting facts & details can be found at the Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society

Check out this great article by Ric O’Barry from The Cove, expressing his thoughts on Tilly and Sea World…

I went with my brother to the Osceola County Shelter and there are so many dogs that need loving homes.  My heart just broke seeing these beautiful animals desperate for affection.  I almost left with 4 dogs.  Unfortunately Nadine was not there :(  She is so missed.  We are desperate to get her back.

CALL FOR ACTION - ANSWERED!!!

Today I went with my brother to the West Campus to put up my official flyer, and check out the art installation.  We hurry in through the bottom floor and make our way upstairs.  As I turn the corner there is the phone booth.   And, what do I see???  MY COLLABORATION PROJECT IS A SUCCESS!!!
The call for action has been answered and the responses have been overwhelmingly great.  I cannot put into words how proud I am to be part of this art collective. I had a vision of this art installation bringing about the candidates together.  We all want our ideas to go forward, the solidarity that I saw from my peers just took my breath away for a second.  I was smiling from EAR to EAR.  Art  triumphed as a collective, a collaboration, a human effort, and an emotion.

I went through the design studios speaking to anyone who I encountered about my ideas for new social networking and how to improve what is already in place.  It was wonderful to meet and greet students who had questions for me about the art installation, my campaign, and me.

I embarked on this campaign with a sense of hope to bring new initiatives that I know will do nothing but advance the role of our AIAS chapter in our school and community.

So beautiful:

I saw Professor R. who and talked with me about my campaign, and what brought about this installation.
He said to me:
"I didn't know what exactly it was about.  Then I saw your name on it and it made more sense"

isn't that perfect.

TANK TOP TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not quite a t-shirt...or you could call it a t-shirt without sleeves ;)

Last night after coming back from Kinkos and getting my official flyer printed I looked at my long to do list and thought to myself:
"Shit I can adorn the tank top before I call it a day."

And, so I Analia'ized it.

SOUND THE ALARMS: CAMPAIGN WEEK IS HERE :)

It is 12:14am - and it's the official start of AIAS Valencia Campaign Week :)  I've been preparing for today,  and I am glad it is finally here.

I just came back from kinkos, with my official flyer:

lets get voting!

Art Installation

"Art is anything you can get away with"

~Andy Warhol

~

In efforts to go green AIAS is only allowing candidates one 11x17 poster.  I went to building 9 to scope it out, and the vacant space next to the security phone was begging for attention.  I had to abide.

It is only natural that we outgrow even our basic comforts
We give up something good, for something better

Background:

My father had trimmed their front tree.  I saw the stump and knew I wanted to use it.
We've had this old phone in our family, which was now stored in the attic.  My mother let me take it and use it for something better than clutter.

My name within a heart?  I needed some nostalgia.

I attached a sharpie and tape to encourage collaboration from other candidates.

Art is a collective.

The Perimeter of Ignorance

exploding star

~

"The evidence all points to the fact that we occupy not a well-mannered clockwork universe, but a destructive, violent, and hostile zoo.

Of course, Earth can be bad for your health too. On land, grizzly bears want to maul you; in the oceans, sharks want to eat you. Snowdrifts can freeze you, deserts dehydrate you, earthquakes bury you, volcanoes incinerate you. Viruses can infect you, parasites suck your vital fluids, cancers take over your body, congenital diseases force an early death. And even if you have the good luck to be healthy, a swarm of locusts could devour your crops, a tsunami could wash away your family, or a hurricane could blow apart your town.

So the universe wants to kill us all. But let's ignore that complication for the moment."

Milan Design Week 2011: Philippe Starck lighting the way

Whenever I think of Philippe Starck, it reminds me of some douche bag from my Design 2 class, but after that his Louis XIV Ghost Chair comes to mind.

'marie coquine chandelier' by philippe starck
images courtesy of baccarat

From Design Boom:
the designs within the 'highlights collection' range from contemporary reinterpretations of classic chandeliers to complete free-ranging design variations in which heritage is fused with modernity. here, crystal is combined with the most unlikely materials into lighting structures, utilizing LED technologies. Philippe starck's 'marie coquine chandelier' features a classic looking candelabra that is structured around an umbrella.

acting as a canopy over the lighting unit, it diffuses its luminosity to create a soft ambience.

_______

This chandelier specially with its tiny shades is not my style.  Yet when I saw this chandelier something really caught my eye.  I don't know if it is the oddly placed umbrella, or the unified color that makes the parts blend in while still showcasing the baccarat crystals, which attracted me....But something about this design pleases me.

He took a very conservative Marie gave her an update and a little naughty (coquine)charm.

Rawr: Friend to Tigers and Humans Alike

Yesterday I went to pick up my mother's Jeep from service at Napleton / Kissimmee
and saw this ad:

I am not happy with the LIVE Tiger at the event.  I e-mailed the organization who is promoting it, Orlando Jeep Club, and will be calling the manager at Napleton to take down the flyers and cease the promotion of animal cruelty.

_____

Here is my email:

I sent it to the social director, president and anyone who is on the contact us page.  This is a very serious issue, and they need to realize how determined I am.  Animal oppression, animal rights and animal welfare is something I feel strong about - compassion is not an option but a necessity.

_____

Please tell Orlando Jeep Club that animals are not for our entertainment.
Please tell Napleton Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge that promoting this is cruel.

Media Marketing Darling: VOTE APRIL 4th

It is that time of the year when the AIAS votes for their new member leads: Pres, Vice Pres, Treasury, Media Marketing, etc....

I will be amazing at this position because I live/work/and breathe all things internet.  I have accounts on all major media outlets.  I am ready to spread the word of Architecture.   I have lots of ideas how to expand our association, what to do better, what to do new at all.  I am very excited.  I wish I would of attended more meetings this semester, because I need alliances.  VOTE FOR ME.

Ever since Architectural History 2 and learning about the Constructivist period - the Russian advertising posters always stood out:

I have been waiting to use it for a campaign but I could not decide when and where.
This is a great time to put it into action.  The juxtaposition of the black and white female with the bold colors the bright call to action font is perfect for my Savage Minimalist revolution.

I need these posters made, printed, and posted around campus so that I may win the position I am seeking.

I will be attending the Monday meeting to successfully start my campaign for action.

Dear New York Times Reader,

Today marks a significant transition for The New York Times as we introduce digital subscriptions. It’s an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in The Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform. The change will primarily affect those who are heavy consumers of the content on our Web site and on mobile applications.

This change comes in two stages. Today, we are rolling out digital subscriptions to our readers in Canada, which will enable us to fine-tune the customer experience before our global launch. On March 28, we will begin offering digital subscriptions in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

If you are a home delivery subscriber of The New York Times, you will continue to have full and free access to our news, information, opinion and the rest of our rich offerings on your computer, smartphone and tablet. International Herald Tribune subscribers will also receive free access to NYTimes.com.

If you are not a home delivery subscriber, you will have free access up to a defined reading limit. If you exceed that limit, you will be asked to become a digital subscriber.

This is how it will work, and what it means for you:

On NYTimes.com, you can view 20 articles each month at no charge (including slide shows, videos and other features). After 20 articles, we will ask you to become a digital subscriber, with full access to our site.

On our smartphone and tablet apps, the Top News section will remain free of charge. For access to all other sections within the apps, we will ask you to become a digital subscriber.

The Times is offering three digital subscription packages that allow you to choose from a variety of devices (computer, smartphone, tablet). More information about these plans is available at nytimes.com/access.

Readers who come to Times articles through links from search, blogs and social media like Facebook and Twitter will be able to read those articles, even if they have reached their monthly reading limit. For some search engines, users will have a daily limit of free links to Times articles.

The home page at NYTimes.com and all section fronts will remain free to browse for all users at all times.

For more information, go to nytimes.com/digitalfaq.

Thank you for reading The New York Times, in all its forms.

Sincerely,
Arthur Sulzberger Jr.
Publisher, The New York Times

God fucking damn it.  I love to read the NYTimes but now they want $20 a month for a digital subscription!!!! I understand asking for $$$ for contect but wow.  I already get Better Homes and Gardens, Vogue, Cosmo, and Architectural Digest delivered and most those subscriptions are only $15-20 a year.  w - t - f....  Now I have 20 articles a month so I have to choose wisely what I read and what I dismiss; the proverbial Sophie's choice.  I love getting lost in their slideshows of fashion, architecture, art and Bill Cunningham's people!!!  I hope this doesn't transfer over to T Magazine.

read on.
